INTRODUCTION-

Urban Extension Road-II or NH-344M is an upcoming 75.7 km long, 6 lanes & 6 lanes wide grade-separated expressway in Delhi NCR, India. It would start from National Highway 44 at Alipur then pass from Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Dwarka, and end at Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway on National Highway 48 near Mahipalpur.

The Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) is a significant infrastructure project under construction in Delhi. It aims to provide a high-speed, access-controlled road connecting various parts of the city, particularly the northwest and southwest quadrants. Here are the key details about the project.

Route and Structure:

  • UER-II is a 74.98 km long expressway with a 6-lane main route and additional spurs.
  • The main route runs from NH-44 near Alipur in the north to NH-48 near the IGI Airport’s Shiv Murti in the south.
  • It passes through major areas such as Bawana, Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Dwarka.

Spurs:

  • A 29.6 km long spur connects Bawana to Barwasni in Sonipat.
  • A 7.3 km long spur connects Najafgarh to Bahadurgarh.

Phases and Construction:

  • Phase 1 covers the main northwest quadrant and is expected to be completed by 2024. It includes the primary expressway and the two spurs.
  • Phase 2 involves expanding the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and constructing elevated corridors in the southwestern quadrant, specifically around Vasant Kunj and key intersections.

Cost and Contractors:

  • The project is estimated to cost INR 7,715 crores.
  • It is divided into several construction packages awarded to different contractors. For example, HG Infra Engineering is handling the section from NH-1 to Karala-Kanjhawala Road, while Gawar Constructions is responsible for the section from Nangloi-Najafgarh Road to Dwarka Sector 24.

UER Connectivity:

  • Starting Point and Major Areas: UER 2 starts near Bankoli village on NH 44 close to Alipur and extends to Dwarka Sector 24. It passes through Bawana Industrial Area, Rohini, Nangloi, and Najafgarh, effectively functioning as the third ring road of Delhi
  • Airport and Regional Access: UER 2 is set to facilitate easier access to Indira Gandhi International Airport and surrounding areas, benefiting travelers from Sonipat, Panipat, Ambala, and Chandigarh.

Economic Impact:

The project includes the construction of numerous flyovers, underpasses, and interchanges, which will facilitate smoother and faster movement of goods and services, thus boosting economic activities in the region.

Traffic Relief:

By providing an alternative route to the inner and outer ring roads, UER 2 aims to reduce traffic congestion within Delhi.

Future Expansion:

With its comprehensive planning and phased execution, UER 2 is poised to integrate seamlessly with future infrastructure projects, further enhancing Delhi’s road network.
